Is there a good Linux DJ Software out there?

Right around when the Pandemic started I started to fiddle with some of my old Laptops. I have a Toshiba Satellite (S50D-A) and I've had this thing a long time. I'm certain I bought this in 2012 or 2013. It was my DJ laptop for years. It was solid... but it had Windows 8. Ughhhh. So I upgraded to Windows 10. No Problem right... of course my Numark Controller wouldn't work on a Windows 10. Hmmmm I can't recall why.... No Drivers or something. I tried everything but I couldn't get the Numark working on anything but Windows 8 or below.

So I tried to install Windows 7. Big mistake. Very little driver support. I got almost everything installed but it took 5+ hours. Longer probably. And that was just to get the minimum OS installed with drivers. Nevermind Internet, Printer, software... It was 2 days before I got it going.

I was frustrated. WTF?!? I know it's an old machine but it wasn't that old but the combo of old hardware and then an older Windows OS made the Toshiba slow. DJ gigs where at a stand still so I decided... let's give Linux a try.

  • What Flavour do I pick?

I hadn't really thought about Linux since Mandrake in 2004 or 2005. I played around a little bit here and there but it just wasn't ready for me as a daily driver. I starting my research and yadda-yadda-yadda I chose Mint.

I gotta say... It was friggin awesome. I download the .iso in 5-8 minutes... placed it on my bootable USB stick and that thing installed in 10 minutes. 10 Minutes!!! and it came with tonnes of wicked cool software. And 30 seconds after I rebooted it found my Wireless Printer and worked right away.

It just found my Wireless HP Printer and installed it!!! I probably spent an hour downloading & installing my printer on Windows and this Linux Mint (Without asking) installed my Wi-Fi Printer just like that.

My Toshiba Linux Experience on my Laptop was going great... I was hooked.

Of course my old Toshiba Laptop was running amazing on it too. I mean it was fast. I could do almost anything I wanted to do on Linux that I could do on a Windows or MAC.

It would be almost 2 years until I got my next DJ gig but I didn't really know it at the time obviously so I needed to get my DJ Laptop up and running.

Linux, known for its stability, security, and flexibility, has become a popular operating system among professionals and enthusiasts across various fields, including audio production. However, a robust DJ app tailored specifically for Linux is needed to cater to the growing number of DJs and music producers using this platform.

Virtual DJ on Linux seems like a good idea.

A DJ app for Linux would provide users with a reliable and open-source solution, leveraging Linux's inherent stability to ensure seamless performance during live sets, where any software failure can be disastrous. Additionally, many DJs appreciate the customization and control Linux offers, allowing them to tailor their setup to their unique needs and preferences.

An open-source DJ app would also foster innovation and community-driven development, enabling users to contribute to the software, improve features, and fix bugs. This would ensure continuous improvement and adaptability to emerging trends in digital music production. Furthermore, a Linux DJ app would reduce dependency on commercial software, providing a cost-effective solution for aspiring DJs and producers who may not have the resources to invest in expensive software.

In essence, we need Virtual DJ on Linux working natively.
